The Maine Coon in Brief
Big, slowly
Maine Coons are one of the largest domestic breeds. Males often reach 13 to 18 pounds and females 8 to 12, and they keep growing until three to five years old.
Gentle and sociable
They are known as the gentle giants of the cat world: friendly, playful well into adulthood, and happy to follow their people from room to room.
A coat built for winters
The long, water-resistant coat suits a Minnesota winter. It sheds, and a brush two or three times a week keeps it free of knots.
How Big a Maine Coon Kitten Gets
Maine Coons grow slowly. A kitten that goes home at ten weeks weighs about the same as any other kitten, then keeps filling out for years. These are typical ranges; individual cats vary, and males run larger than females.
| Age | Typical weight |
|---|---|
| 10 weeks | 2 to 4 lb |
| 6 months | 7 to 11 lb |
| 1 year | 9 to 15 lb |
| Grown, females (3 to 5 years) | 8 to 12 lb |
| Grown, males (3 to 5 years) | 13 to 18 lb |
Is a Maine Coon Right for You?
A good match if you want
- A sociable cat that follows you around and joins in
- A playful companion well into adulthood
- A cat that usually gets on with children and calm dogs
- A big, sturdy cat rather than a delicate one
- A long-term friend: 10 to 13 years is typical
Think twice if
- Someone at home has a cat allergy. Maine Coons are not hypoallergenic
- You cannot brush a long coat two or three times a week
- You want a cat that keeps to itself all day
- There is no room for a large litter box and a sturdy cat tree
- The cat would need to live outdoors
Colors at Kats Kits
Maine Coons come in almost every color and pattern. Recent kittens include red classic tabbies, blue classic tabbies, blue cream torties and brown classic torbies, polydactyls and solid blacks, and earlier litters have included brown mackerel tabbies, brown and white tabbies and solid blues. Each kitten on the available kittens page has its color listed.

Kittens Delivered Across the US
Most families come from outside Minnesota. A kitten can travel to you with a flight nanny who carries it in the cabin, as airline cargo, or by ground transport; how kittens travel explains each option. Kat delivers in person within about an hour of Farmington and can meet you at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International (MSP), about 30 minutes from the cattery.

Your Kitten's First Week Home
A new home is a big change for a ten-week-old kitten. A little preparation makes the first days calm instead of stressful.
- Start with one room. Food, water, a litter box and a hiding spot in a quiet room. Open up the rest of the house over a few days.
- Keep the food the same. Ask Kat what the kitten is eating and stay with it at first. A sudden change of food is the commonest cause of an upset stomach. More on what Maine Coons eat.
- Book the vet. The health guarantee asks for a check within 72 hours. Book it before your kitten arrives.
- Expect a sniffle. Stress can bring on a runny nose, watery eyes or a loose stool for a day or two. Mention anything that lasts to your vet and to Kat.
- Give it something to climb. A sturdy cat tree and a tall scratching post save your furniture.
Shopping list
- A large, uncovered litter box and unscented litter
- The same food the kitten eats now
- Wide, shallow food and water bowls
- A tall, heavy scratching post and a cat tree
- A wide-toothed comb and a slicker brush (grooming guide)
- A sturdy carrier
- Wand toys for play together
How to Buy a Maine Coon Kitten Safely
Maine Coons are one of the most copied listings online, and fake kitten ads are common. Whoever you buy from, these checks protect you:
- Check the registry yourself. Look the cattery up on the registry's own site, not through a link the seller sends. Kats Kits is on the ACFA Maine Coon breeder list.
- Talk to the breeder. A phone or video call with the kitten in view tells you more than any photo.
- Get the terms in writing before you pay anything: price, deposit, health guarantee and what happens if something goes wrong. Ours are in the kitten contract.
- Be wary of pressure. A breeder who rushes you, or asks for gift cards or cryptocurrency, is a warning sign.
- Expect questions back. A good breeder wants to know about your home as much as you want to know about the kitten.
